A PSA nitrogen generator separates nitrogen from compressed air by passing that air through a bed of carbon molecular sieve. Contamination that reaches the sieve causes permanent, irreversible damage to it.
The filters are what stop contamination reaching it. Compressed air can arrive carrying three different kinds of contamination — solids, liquid aerosols and vapor — and no single element removes all three, so up to three stages are used, each taking out a class of contaminant the next one cannot. How many stages a given machine has depends on the model; a two-stage machine is not a machine with a filter missing.
The three filter stages, and what each one is for

The ratings, and where they are published
The particulate stage is consistent across every South-Tek PSA line documented in this Help Center. The other two are not, so confirm them against the article for your model or against the kit contents rather than assuming them.

Two-stage and three-stage machines
The most common question this article gets is some version of "the article says three filters and I can only find two." Usually that is correct rather than a missing part — a large share of the installed fleet is two-stage by design, with no adsorbing element at all.

What to take off the machine before ordering
- The model and the serial number. The serial number is not optional on industrial machines — filter kits for industrial nitrogen generators are not standardized across all models and configurations, and South-Tek requires the serial number to quote the correct one.
- What color the filter bowls are, if your model is one of those listed in the warning below. Two housing generations are in the field, one with black bowls and one with off-white bowls, and on some models they take different kits. If your model is not in the list below, take the kit from the sources under Getting the right kit rather than trying to select it by bowl color.
Drains — the failure that costs a sieve bed
A coalescing filter does not destroy the liquid it captures. It concentrates it in the bottom of the bowl, and a drain has to remove it. When the drain stops working the bowl fills, and the collected oil and water are then carried through to the next stage and on to the sieve.
Two related requirements come from the same place:
- Feed air within specification. Moisture content higher than specified can damage the adsorbent media and voids the warranty. The filters are sized to handle carryover, not to substitute for a dryer that is undersized, switched off or failed.
- South-Tek specified elements only. Use of filters other than those specified by South-Tek Systems could result in damages not covered by the warranty.
How often, and what it means when an element does not last
There is no single change interval across the fleet. It is set by the line, and on some lines by the housing generation and the build date as well. Published intervals in this Help Center run from every three months to every twelve, so take yours from the filter maintenance article for your model rather than from a general rule.

Whatever the published figure, it assumes the stage ahead of it is doing its job. Each stage's documentation names the condition that shortens it, which means an element that comes out early is telling you something specific about the air supply.

Before you open a filter bowl
2. Power the system down.
3. Confirm zero pressure at the gauges before anything is unscrewed. Read it on the gauge. Never test by cracking a bowl to see whether it is still live. Some machines require more than one gauge at zero — the legacy FPS-15000 and FPS-20000 require both the air supply gauge and the process pressure gauge at zero, not one. Confirm which gauges apply to your machine before you start.

Getting the right kit
Elements are ordered as a kit for the machine, not individually by rating. This article does not carry a model-to-kit table, because that table is maintained in one place and restating it here is how two lists end up disagreeing with each other.
Which of the two routes below applies is decided by one test: look your model up in the Commercial Replacement Filter Kit Reference. If it is in that table, it is a commercial system and the table gives you the kit. If it is not — which is the case for the N2-GEN industrial generators — the kit is quoted against the serial number instead.

A note on membrane systems
Everything above is written for PSA machines, which separate nitrogen using a carbon molecular sieve. South-Tek also builds membrane nitrogen systems, which separate through a hollow-fiber membrane instead. Membrane systems are filtered too, but the stage counts and ratings in this article are not written for them.
