This article covers receiving, mounting, installation, commissioning, leak checking, and normal operation of the LABTEK™ TYP2M nitrogen generator. The system has no electrical connections and no user-adjustable settings. Once commissioned, it operates automatically.
Receiving & Storage
Inspect all components for damage upon delivery. Document any visible damage with photos and report it to the carrier immediately before contacting South-Tek Systems. South-Tek Systems is not responsible for damage that occurs during shipping and handling.
Until installation, store the unit upright in a dry, climate-controlled environment between 50°F and 80°F. Do not stack objects on top of the generator. Keep all hoses dry to prevent moisture from entering the generator or storage tank upon connection.
Mounting
The LABTEK™ TYP2M can be mounted in one of two configurations. Wall mounting is recommended where possible. The unit must always be installed indoors, upright, in an environment between 40°F and 90°F, away from water and moving equipment.
Wall Mounting
- Use 4 wall anchors capable of supporting a combined load of at least 200 lbs at the 4 mounting points. Use studs whenever possible.
- Locate the desired height and position of the top mounting bracket. Mount the first bracket to the wall with the Mount Lock Hole at the top. Verify the bracket is level.
- Secure the second bracket to the lower mount tab on the back of the cabinet using the supplied ¼″×20 screws and nuts through the Mount Lock Holes.
- Hang the cabinet on the top bracket by sliding the keyed holes on the cabinet's mounting tabs over the bracket studs.
- Once the cabinet is hanging, insert the 2 locking bolts into the Mount Lock Holes on the top bracket.
- Anchor the bottom bracket to the wall to complete the installation. Both top and bottom must be secured before the system is placed in service.
Tank Mounting
If mounting the generator on its nitrogen storage tank, the tank must be anchored securely to a concrete floor using appropriately sized anchors before attaching the generator. Verify the tank is stable and cannot tip before hanging the generator.
Installation & Gas Connections
The LABTEK™ TYP2M is supplied with quick-disconnect fittings and Push-Lok hose with connectors. A bulk water separator is required on the air inlet — it should be positioned where expelled water can drain safely to the floor or a plumbed drain. Use Teflon tape or equivalent thread sealant on all threaded connections.
- Install all fittings on the storage tank using Teflon tape or equivalent.
- Install the quick-connect nipple and valved nipple on the Inflator/Deflator. The smaller nipple goes on the inlet (left) and the larger valved nipple on the outlet (right).
- Connect the hose from the storage tank to the Inflator/Deflator. Cut the hose to length and push the appropriate fitting into the hose end. A drop of oil on the fitting eases insertion.
- Connect the hose from the storage tank to the generator outlet. The generator outlet should be fitted with a non-valved nipple on an elbow. Use Teflon tape on all threads.
- Turn the tank outlet valve to the Off position so the system can charge without immediately flowing to the process.
- Install the inlet valve on the generator's air inlet connection.
- Confirm the System On/Off Valve is in the Off position.
- Connect the supply line from the air compressor through the bulk water separator to the generator air inlet.
Commissioning
- Start the air compressor and allow it to reach full operating pressure.
- Slowly open the System On/Off Valve. You will hear air moving through the system and nitrogen beginning to fill the storage tank.
- If a leak or bad connection is detected at this point, close the valve immediately and correct the issue before proceeding.
- If a leak is present within the unit itself, remove the cover to locate the source. Contact South-Tek Systems before replacing any internal parts — use only factory-supplied replacement parts.
- Allow the storage tank to charge to its factory-set pressure setpoint. The pressure gauge on the tank will indicate current pressure. When the setpoint is reached, you will hear a small puff of air as the internal pressure switch closes the supply valve automatically.
- Perform a leak check (see below) before opening the nitrogen outlet to the process.
Checking for Leaks
Perform the following three-step leak check sequence after the storage tank has fully charged:
Step 1 — System integrity check: Close both the inlet and outlet valves and allow the system to sit for several minutes. The tank pressure gauge should hold steady. A dropping gauge indicates an internal leak — contact South-Tek Systems for support.
Step 2 — Downstream leak check: Open only the outlet valve with the inlet valve closed. Wait several minutes and observe whether the tank pressure drops. A pressure drop indicates a leak downstream of the tank — check all hose connections, splits, and fittings in the nitrogen supply lines.
Step 3 — Upstream leak check: With the inlet valve closed and the compressor not supplying any other station, the compressor should fill its receiver and shut off. If the compressor continues to run or receiver pressure drops, there is a leak upstream of the generator. Inspect all fittings and connections on the supply side.
Normal Operation
Once commissioned and leak-free, the LABTEK™ TYP2M operates fully automatically with no user intervention required. Open the tank outlet valve to the process. The system will:
- Continuously supply nitrogen to the storage tank while the supply valve is open.
- Automatically close the supply valve when the tank reaches the factory-set storage pressure.
- Automatically reopen the supply valve and resume nitrogen production when the tank pressure drops 10–15 PSI below the setpoint.
The nitrogen output from the storage tank can be split after the tank outlet to supply multiple stations simultaneously, provided the total demand remains within the generator's rated flow capacity. Confirm flow requirements with South-Tek Systems if you are unsure whether your system's demand is within specification.
