This article applies to South-Tek Systems industrial N2-GEN TS, CS, and S series PSA nitrogen generators.
Routine preventive maintenance is important for maintaining nitrogen purity, stable operation, and long-term equipment reliability. This article outlines the recommended maintenance intervals for the generator and associated inline filtration components.
Important safety precautions
Before performing any maintenance:
- Only qualified personnel should perform maintenance and repairs.
- Isolate incoming and outgoing pressure to the generator.
- Depressurize the section being serviced before opening filters, tubing, or piping.
- Disconnect electrical power before performing electrical work.
- Use approved replacement parts that meet or exceed the original specification.
Recommended maintenance intervals
- All filter elements: every 6 months
- Oxygen analyzer calibration: every 12 months
- Mufflers: every 12 months
- CMS material top-up: every 36 months
- Valves and regulators: every 60 months
Filter replacement requirements
All filter elements are recommended to be replaced every 6 months. This includes the generator’s standard incoming air filtration as well as any associated inline filtration installed as part of the system.
Examples of filtration that should be included in the 6-month replacement interval include:
- Incoming particulate filters
- Incoming coalescing filters
- Incoming absorber or carbon filters
- Pre-dryer filtration
- Post-dryer filtration
- Booster inlet filtration
- High-pressure filtration
- Sterile filtration
Clean filter elements are important for proper system performance and for protecting the generator media, valves, analyzer, and downstream components.
Oxygen analyzer calibration
The oxygen analyzer should be calibrated annually to maintain reliable purity monitoring and alarm performance.
If the system includes an oxygen analyzer, follow the approved South-Tek calibration procedure and use the correct calibration gas and flow conditions for the installed sensor type.
Muffler replacement
Exhaust mufflers should be replaced every 12 months as part of routine preventive maintenance.
CMS top-up
The carbon molecular sieve (CMS) material should be checked and topped up every 36 months to help maintain system performance and purity.
Valve and regulator replacement
All valves and regulators should be replaced every 60 months as part of the major preventive maintenance interval.
General filter service procedure
The exact filter bowl style may vary by model, but the general service approach is the same:
- Stop the generator.
- Isolate the air supply.
- Depressurize the filter assembly before opening any bowl.
- Remove the filter bowl carefully.
- Replace the filter element with the correct replacement part.
- Inspect seals and bowl components before reassembly.
- Reinstall the bowl and reconnect any drain tubing if applicable.
- Slowly reopen the air inlet valve and check for leaks.
Recommended maintenance practices
- Keep a record of all filter changes, analyzer calibrations, muffler changes, CMS service, and valve or regulator replacements.
- Inspect the generator regularly for leaks, abnormal cycling, and unusual alarm activity.
- Replace service items on schedule even if no immediate performance issue is observed.
- Use the generator touchscreen maintenance and filter history features, if equipped, to track service intervals.
When to perform maintenance sooner
Service may be required sooner if the compressed air supply is contaminated, if the system operates in a demanding environment, or if abnormal pressure drop, purity issues, or alarm activity is observed.
