Applies to: Alkin W3 Series high-pressure air & gas boosters — W3-11-345-FP6B (15 HP), W3-15-345-FP6B (20 HP), and W3-18-345-FP6B (25 HP).
Installation
This article covers positioning, piping, and electrical hookup, up to the point where the unit is ready for its first run. Confirm the site is prepared first (see Site & Utility Requirements) and review the Safety Guidelines before beginning. Perform the first start using the Startup & Commissioning procedure.
⚠ Warning — Qualified personnel Installation involves electrical connections and high-pressure piping. Work must be performed by qualified personnel in full compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local codes. Keep the unit de-energized and unpressurized until installation is complete.
Positioning
- Set the unit on a flat, level, stable surface with all feet in contact with the floor. Slope must not exceed 10° in any direction.
- Maintain 3 ft (36 in) of clearance on all sides for cooling airflow and service access.
- Ensure cooling air can flow freely to the enclosure inlets and the top-discharge fan; do not block them.
- The frame's anti-vibration shock mounts mean no special base or anchoring is required.
ℹ Note — Concrete slab recommended For best results, mount the booster on a concrete slab rated for the unit's weight (approximately 1,760 lb). A rigid, level slab minimizes vibration transmission into the surrounding floor. The built-in anti-vibration shock mounts still apply; the slab gives them a solid base to work against.
Connections overview
Inlet (feed) piping
- Connect a regulated, dried, and filtered feed supply at 45–75 PSI to the booster inlet.
- If the intake filter must be moved to cleaner air (away from dirt, heat, dampness, or fumes), use a suitable non-toxic, transparent, steel-wire-reinforced hose no longer than 10 ft (3 m).
- Protect any outdoor intake with a weather hood against rain and fumes.
Discharge piping
⚠ Warning — High-pressure discharge Discharge piping to the fill panel, receiver, or point of use must be properly sized stainless-steel pipe rated for the full output pressure (up to 5000 PSI) and installed to all applicable codes. Undersized or unrated piping can fail under pressure. Consult South-Tek if you need guidance on pipe selection.
Condensate drain line
- Route a hose from the bottom silencer/condensate fitting to a suitable drum or container.
- Secure the hose so it cannot whip loose under discharge.
Electrical connections
Make electrical connections per the wiring diagrams and all applicable codes, including grounding requirements. Complete these checks before any startup:
- Verify line voltage matches the motor nameplate, and that the motor nameplate matches your available supply.
- Install a wall disconnect switch with magnetic protection rated above the motor full-load current.
- Confirm the starter and maximum-load settings match the motor power and current data.
- Confirm a proper earth/ground connection.
▲ Attention — Tighten connections Re-tighten all electrical connections, including those on the terminal strip inside the electrical panel, during installation and commissioning. Transport can loosen terminals.
⚠ Warning — Rotation direction Confirm the flywheel turns in the direction of the arrow at first start. Reversed rotation reverses cooling airflow and stops oil pumping, so the unit runs without lubrication. If rotation is wrong, stop immediately and have a qualified electrician correct the phasing before running further.
ℹ Note — First start Once the unit is positioned, piped, and wired, perform the first run using the Startup & Commissioning procedure. To coordinate startup support, open a support ticket with your model and serial number.
