This article outlines the safety requirements for installing, operating, and maintaining the South-Tek N2-BLAST® FPS-10000, FPS-16500, and FPS-22500 nitrogen generators. Read the full O&M manual before performing any work on the system. For equipment used alongside the generator — such as external air compressors — also refer to those manufacturers' safety guidelines.

Nitrogen Gas Safety

The N2-BLAST® FPS-10000, FPS-16500, and FPS-22500 produce nitrogen (N₂) at a low flow rate. Nitrogen gas is not poisonous, but high concentrations displace oxygen and can cause asphyxiation.

⚠ WarningInstall the unit in a well-ventilated room that is not sealed off from normal living space air changes. Do not directly inhale nitrogen gas.

When performing filter changes or other maintenance, depressurize the affected section fully before opening any fittings or filter housings. Verify zero pressure on the system gauge before beginning work.

General Safety Requirements

All personnel involved in installation, operation, or maintenance of the N2-BLAST® must read and fully understand the O&M manual before performing any work. The following requirements apply at all times:

• Follow safe working practices in accordance with OSHA and applicable local health and safety regulations.
• Only competent, trained, and authorized individuals may install, operate, maintain, or repair the system.
• The owner is responsible for keeping the unit in safe working condition at all times.
• Use only approved replacement parts. Ensure all replacement parts meet or exceed original specifications.
• Only use the FPS-10000, FPS-16500, and FPS-22500 for their designed purpose. Do not tamper with or modify the equipment beyond its technical specifications.
• Contact South-Tek Systems if you have questions not addressed in the manual or in this article.

Pressurized Gas Hazards

⚠ WarningComponents operate under pressure. Pressurized gases are dangerous and may cause serious injury or death if handled incorrectly.

• Never allow pressurized gas to exhaust from an unsecured hose. An unsecured hose can whip and cause serious injury. If a hose bursts during operation, immediately close all isolation valves if it is safe to do so, then shut off the unit.
• Never disable or bypass any safety relief valves.
• Before performing any mechanical work — including filter changes — isolate incoming and outgoing pressures to the generator and fully depressurize the section to be serviced. Shut the air inlet valve and verify zero pressure before opening any fittings or filter bowls.

Air Supply Safety

The incoming air supply must be maintained between 40–100°F (4–38°C) with a pressure dew point below 40°F (4°C). Air that does not meet these requirements may cause system damage not covered under warranty. Incoming air pressure must be between 100 PSIG and 125 PSIG unless the system has been otherwise configured. Operating outside of specified pressure limits may degrade nitrogen purity or damage internal components.

ℹ NoteThe FPS-10000, FPS-16500, and FPS-22500 include an integrated air dryer and air filtration. No external dryer hookup or configuration is required.

Electrical Safety

• Always disconnect the generator from supply power before performing any electrical work.
• Electrical connections must be made by a qualified electrician. Connect the nitrogen generator to an approved electrical disconnect rated for the specified load.
• Wear safety glasses when the cabinet door is open while the machine is running.
• Use hearing protection when the equipment is in operation.

Installation Safety

The FPS-10000, FPS-16500, and FPS-22500 are floor-standing units. They are shipped upright inside a wooden crate and require a forklift for unloading and positioning.

⚠ WarningUse only properly rated lifting and rigging equipment when moving the generator. Avoid heavy impacts and jolting motions that may damage internal components.

• Install the unit on a solid, flat surface. Four anchor bolt holes are provided on the support legs. Anchoring is not required by South-Tek Systems, but all applicable local and site codes for securing floor-standing equipment must be followed.
• Install the unit indoors, in a nonhazardous location, in an upright position.
• Operating ambient temperature must be between 40°F and 90°F (4°C–38°C).
• Do not install near a heat source or in any area where steam or water may contact the unit.
• Maintain at least 36 inches of clearance in front of the cabinet for maintenance access, and at least 6 inches at the rear for ventilation.
• Use a floor jack to reposition the unit after unloading. Do not drag or tip the cabinet.

▲ AttentionAny modifications made to the system without written consent from South-Tek Systems will void the product warranty.

Warranty and Unauthorized Modifications

All programs are proprietary and password-protected from the factory. Do not alter any factory controls, instrumentation, or PLC settings without prior written approval from South-Tek Systems. Unauthorized changes void all warranties and may cause system damage or malfunction.

Do not adjust the factory preset cut-in and cut-out pressure settings without first consulting South-Tek Systems. Adjusting these settings may alter nitrogen purity and flow performance.
