This article applies to South-Tek Systems industrial N2-GEN TS, CS, and S series PSA nitrogen generators.
Read and understand all safety information before installing, operating, or servicing the generator. Safe operation depends on proper installation, correct operating conditions, and qualified personnel following approved procedures.
General safety requirements
- Only authorized, trained, and competent personnel should perform installation, operation, maintenance, or repair.
- The owner is responsible for keeping the unit in a safe operating condition at all times.
- Use approved replacement parts that meet or exceed the original specification.
- Do not tamper with, experiment on, or exceed the technical specifications of the equipment.
- Unauthorized modifications may affect performance and can void warranty coverage.
Pressure safety
The nitrogen generator, storage tank, and connected piping contain pressurized gas. Pressurized gas can cause serious injury or death if handled improperly.
- Always isolate incoming and outgoing pressure before performing mechanical service.
- Depressurize the section being serviced before opening filters, tubing, valves, or piping.
- Never allow pressurized gas to exhaust from an unsecured hose.
- Never disable or bypass safety relief valves.
- If a hose fails during operation, close isolation valves if it is safe to do so and power down the system.
Ventilation and exhaust gas safety
The nitrogen generator exhaust stream contains a higher oxygen concentration than normal air and should be vented outside or into a large, well-ventilated room. Proper ventilation is required during normal operation and during any service activity that involves venting gas.
- Install the generator in a well-ventilated area.
- Do not install the generator in a sealed room without adequate air exchange.
- Follow all local and site requirements for exhaust routing and ventilation.
Nitrogen is not poisonous, but high concentrations can displace oxygen and create an asphyxiation hazard. Always maintain proper ventilation around the equipment.
Electrical safety
- Disconnect supply power before performing any electrical work.
- All electrical work should be completed by qualified personnel.
- Follow all local and site electrical codes.
- Do not energize the system until wiring has been verified against the project documentation and electrical schematic.
Personal protective equipment
- Wear safety glasses if the cabinet door is open while the machine is operating.
- Use hearing protection when the equipment is operating.
- Use any additional PPE required by your facility or site safety program.
Safe maintenance practices
- Stop the generator before servicing.
- Isolate air and nitrogen pressure sources before opening any component.
- Confirm the section being serviced is fully depressurized.
- Use proper lockout and tagout practices in accordance with site requirements.
- Do not perform service work unless you understand the procedure and have the correct replacement parts.
Installation and operating warnings
- Use the generator only for its intended purpose.
- Follow the project-specific installation drawings and supporting documentation.
- Make sure the installation environment meets the required site and utility conditions.
- Improper installation or operation may damage the equipment and create unsafe conditions.
When to stop and get support
Stop and contact South-Tek Systems if:
- You are unsure whether the system is safe to operate.
- You identify damaged piping, hoses, wiring, or pressure-containing components.
- A relief device appears to have been bypassed, altered, or damaged.
- You need to repair a component not covered by your current procedures.
